Security has been tightened throughout the country with officers and soldiers observed on patrol in major cities in anticipation of expected anti-government protests called to coincide with the nation's independence anniversary.

Residents in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mbeya, Mwanza noted the day began with unusual quietness, with a large number opting to stay home amid uncertainty over if the demonstrations would proceed.

The protests were organized to demand political reforms following the unrest that followed last October's elections which left an unknown number of people dead.

Government Acknowledges Employing Force

Officials have conceded using force against protesters, asserting that some groups were attempting to overthrow the regime.

On Tuesday, reporters observed streets that were largely deserted in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam. This stood in sharp contrast to the city's typical weekday activity.

Although quiet, the atmosphere remained tense.

Increased Police Presence Nationwide

Security vehicles were seen driving along primary thoroughfares and junctions, while officers took up positions at strategic locations, including around key public infrastructure.

On social media, activists and campaigners urged supporters to stay alert, suggesting any demonstrations were unlikely to begin until the afternoon. This communication mirrored previous protest calls in Tanzania, when participation grew as the day progressed.

Drivers who went out experienced regular stops at security checkpoints, where police interrogated motorists about where they were headed.

Official Position and Prohibitions

The government has not issued detailed comments on the increased security or on the scheduled demonstrations.

Tanzanian authorities have banned the planned protests and called off independence anniversary events, advising the public to remain at home.

"With many staying at home the atmosphere is quiet but tense."
