Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs go to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round League Cup match against the Magpies.
