Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Party

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a diverse cast of heroes, and a exciting storyline featuring divine entities, evil spirits, and sinister influences increasing in influence within the city.

Note: Key plot points for Episode 3 of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The third episode concluded with a dramatic pause and introduced the premier party of heroes who will separate from the primary party to begin their independent quest, apart from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team consists of the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

With 13 cast members, it was evident from the outset that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

Hence, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Introduction, intertwining the individual narratives before dividing into three smaller tables: Fighters, Strategists, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

As described by the DM, the warrior group is for players who prefer a classically intense battle-oriented gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are few and far between.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might look unsuited, but the actions of the latest installment show why these five characters are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the team understands precisely where to proceed after a brutal first encounter with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing kicked off the story’s plot—used the enemy for his selfish purposes, invading the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the enchanted items to sell off.

Casimir then settled his debts and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, north of the city, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each member has a specific drive to exit the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as the companion and best friend, desires retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure knows the region and advises that it is a dangerous environment.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to kill the target and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their position as prominent individuals in the influential clan could help the group enter locations they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character vowed a life debt to The cleric for his salvation and will now accompany him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule the city for a range of causes, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • The rogue and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The healer defied House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This leaves them no alternative but to travel to the northern region in pursuit of the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

From the latest episode’s post-show segment, we find out that the Soldiers table will not appear the following episode, leaving the remaining eight players to form the Questers and Planners parties.

Audiences can look forward to finding out which players will be where in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, released on October 24.
