"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: I also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile admirers have also petitioned for the honor.

It's clear something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the best bands, they're a inseparable trio. Their videos often show them striding in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest honour. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage young girls to start a band."

"And thus everyone gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The band are speaking from a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The album was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The words follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent toughness required a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The band's openness fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

One man ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an international following.

Yet the sister act will forever be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
