A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
